«Amandine Beyer and her friends from Gli Incogniti let themselves be carried away. The violinist's bow flutters, guided by a light breath, the tormented soul of Matteis. Each phrase plays with words, notes, and figures in search of the pleasure the violin provides the performer. Bass: the apparent simplicity of this music's sources hides a complexity that the musicians must navigate. At times it can be disconcerting, seeming to lose the melodic line in a virtuosic frenzy that can crumble into vertigo and intoxication. The viola, the two theorbo players, and the harpsichordist accompanying Amandine Beyer are voices that, in their boundless solicitude, seem to try everything to console and support the virtuoso bow in its unfathomable quest. Their dialogue freezes or swirls until it leaves one breathless. The melancholy, so sweet on the surface, is nothing more than bitterness and laughter beyond the tears and silence that settle in.»
